Change of Season is Perfect Pergola Maintenance Time
Change of Season is Perfect Pergola Maintenance Time
If you live in a place where the trees have dropped their leaves and the air is turning colder, plan to take a little bit of time to maintain your pergola.
LEAVES
Be sure to remove dried leaves and debris from the top of your pergola. A leaf blower works well for this, or a shop vacuum set to blower mode.
Dried and decaying leaves can clog gutters and downspouts. Just like on your house gutters, when these leaves get wet and then freeze, they can cause blockages that allow ice to build up inside the gutters and posts. When this ice expands, it can cause costly damage.
WATER
The goal is to keep rainwater and melting snow flowing freely through the gutters and posts throughout the winter — and during all the other seasons, too. Be sure the openings at the bottom of the posts are clear as well, so water can flow away.
SNOW
And speaking of snow, always be sure to OPEN the louvers, or RETRACT the roof when snow is expected. Keeping the roof open will prevent snow and ice build-up and help to prevent damage to your pergola’s moving parts.
Check your pergola periodically to prevent ice accumulation, remove any branches that may have fallen and keep gutters clear. This small effort will be rewarded when spring arrives and your pergola is ready to provide many hours of relaxation and enjoyment.
SPRING
When the weather makes you want to be outdoors, it’s time for a bit of pergola maintenance! Just like your car, your pergola looks so much nicer when it’s clean. A mild detergent and water is all you need to wash off dirt and grime. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners. Be sure the gutters are clear of any debris and make sure all moving parts operate freely.
Now it’s time to break out the patio furniture and fire up the barbeque!
YEAR-ROUND LIVING
In areas where outdoor living is a full-time gig, the same basic rules apply to keep your pergola in good working condition so you can enjoy it more. Keep the gutters clear and occasionally hose off any dirt, sand or saltwater that may stick to the surface.
